Total investment in the 101-story, 492-meter-high landmark project, located in Pudong's Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone, amounts to over eight billion Yuan (1.16 billion U.S. dollars).

A total of 4, 000 visitors, natives and foreigners, flocked to the Shanghai World Financial Center on its first opening day to have a sightseeing on Saturday, the Oriental Morning Post reported.

Colombian cliff diver Orlando Duque won the 2008 Red Bull Cliff Diving Championship that took place at the Port of Hamburg, Germany from August 19 -- 23. Following previous years when cliff diving has been featured in natural settings, this year marked a first for both Germany and an urban environment. The world's best cliff divers assembled at the top of a sailing ship, only to plunge downwards with their bodies reaching speeds of 90 kilometres per hour.

The King's pathway hike in Spain

I think this hike is more dangerous than the Plank Walk trail I did in the Hua shan mountains of China and it makes the Angels Landing hike in Zion look like a cake walk. The construction of this walkway lasted 4 years and was finished in 1905. The walkway has now gone many years without maintenance, and is in a highly deteriorated and dangerous state. After a four people died in 2000 (and several prior) the local government closed the entrances. Adventurous tourists still find their way into the walkway. I'm not the author of this video

Female professional wrestling in Bolivia

|
1 COMMENTS
A new phenomenon has been taking Bolivia by storm in recent years: female wrestling. The women don traditional costumes, including a pleated, layered skirt, a bowler hat, shawl and pigtails, and put the WWE to shame:

Although legend has it that some indigenous women of the Aymara people, called Cholitas, have been wrestling for up to 20 years, the trend has only recently reached a critical mass. In 2007 a 20 min. documentary called "The Fighting Cholitas," was entered into several International Film Festivals, including the United Nations Association Film Festival. And in January the women, led by Carmen Rosa a.k.a. "The Champion" and Yolanda Amorosa a.k.a. "The Loving One," formed an association of women wrestlers, which organizes practices twice a week and matches every Sunday.

Chand Baori - Deepest step well in the world

Wednesday, August 20, 2008 |
0 COMMENTS
Chand Baori is a famous stepwell situated in the village Abhaneri near Jaipur in Indian state of Rajasthan.

The Chand Baori, a vast well with flights of steps on three sides, is a 10th century monument situated in Abhaneri. It is a fine example of the architectural excellence prevalent in the past. This impressive step well is as deep as a seven storeyed building. The famous Harshat Mata temple situated opposite to this well shows that there must have been a religious connection with the step-well. The well is 35 m on each side with steps leading down from each side and water can be drawn from any level.

Monarch and members of royal families in Africa

Saturday, August 16, 2008 |
0 COMMENTS
Daniel Lainé's search for the last surviving monarchs of Africa's grandest kingdoms took him all across Africa. He went from Nigeria to Ghana, Zambia to Cameroon — and from the Ivory Coast to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

His resulting photographic tribute to Africa's kings, "Rois d'Afrique," took over three years of investigation, diplomacy — and just plain haranguing to complete.

Although there are hundreds of kings in Africa, Daniel Lainé's book features the kings whose dynasties have had the most impact on African history.

About Daniel Lainé

Daniel Lainé was born on April 29, 1949, in Auxerre, France. He worked as a freelance photographer for Libération, Partir and Grands Reportages before joining the staff of Gamma magazine in 1980.

Emirates' superjumbo Airbus A380-800 lands in New York

Monday, August 04, 2008 |
0 COMMENTS
Airbus's A380 superjumbo touched down at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport on Friday, marking the first commercial arrival of the giant, double-decker passenger plane on US soil.

The Emirates aircraft, carrying 489 passengers in varying degrees of luxury, landed smoothly and on time after a 13-1/2-hour flight from Dubai.

Click on the photos to Enlarge

The plane, fitted out with lie-flat beds, flat screen televisions and spacious, windowed bathrooms in first and business class, is set to return to Dubai on Friday evening.

Emirates, owned by the government of Dubai, is the second airline to put the A380 into service, following Singapore Airlines, which started A380 flights to Sydney in October.

The plane, costing US$327 million (A$352 million) at list prices, did visit New York and Los Angeles in March last year for route-testing purposes, but Friday's flight was the first regularly scheduled arrival of an A380 in the United States.

With its huge capacity and relatively fuel-efficient engines, airlines hope the world's biggest passenger jet will be the most cost-effective way of serving high-volume routes linking big cities, especially in light of soaring oil prices.

Airbus, part of aerospace group EADS, says an A380 uses up to 20 percent less fuel per seat than a Boeing 747, and claims that when fully loaded and flying long distances it is more fuel efficient, per passenger, than a small family car.

The touchdown marks a hard-won victory for Airbus, which spent $10 billion and more than a decade on Europe's largest industrial project, in the face of widespread skepticism.
